Artist Statement
For me, nature is more than just a backdrop; it is a sanctuary, a source of inspiration, and a testament to the beauty and resilience of life. Through photography, I seek to bridge the gap between humanity and the natural world, evoking a sense of awe, inspiration, and profound connection in those who view my work. My goal is to inspire a greater sense of stewardship for our planet, encouraging others to cherish and protect the environment as deeply as I do.
Each photograph is a tribute to the intricate details and fleeting moments that define our world. I believe that every element, no matter how small, holds significance and contributes to the larger tapestry of life. My background in art history and anthropology informs this perspective, guiding me to honor and preserve the rich tapestry of cultures and histories that have shaped our present and will influence our future.
Biography
Throughout my life, the natural world has been both a refuge and a source of profound inspiration. Extensive time in the wilderness has shaped my perspective and instilled in me a deep reverence for the planet and its diverse ecosystems. This connection fuels my mission to inspire others to form their own bonds with the world around them, cultivating a shared sense of stewardship and care for its future.
My journey began with a passion for documentary filmmaking, where I envisioned combining storytelling, art, and nature to share the wonders of the world. While life led me in different directions, my dedication to communicating the beauty and complexity of the planet has remained unwavering. Photography became my chosen medium, a powerful way to connect people with the environment and encourage a deeper appreciation for its richness.
With degrees in art history, anthropology, and music composition, I have explored the intersections of culture, art, and nature. My life experiences include climbing hundreds of mountain peaks, hiking thousands of miles, and accumulating over 3,000 hours of ocean scuba and free diving. These endeavors have given me a profound appreciation for the planet, its history, and its myriad inhabitants.
My professional journey has spanned traditional darkrooms and digital imaging, driven by a focus on capturing and preserving the world’s essence. Over the years, I have honed my skills in professional photo labs, mastered historical photographic processes, and engaged in meticulous photographic restoration. I have also worked extensively in custom framing for professional artists, cataloged art and archaeological finds, and performed detailed copy work, all underscoring my unwavering commitment to precision and preservation.
With over 35 years of experience in photography and 30 years specializing in conservation-level matting and framing, I offer bespoke services of exceptional quality. Beyond photography, I have received formal training in cultural resource management, cataloging photographic collections, and preserving art and artifacts. These efforts are driven by my belief that all forms of artistic expression, visual, audio, and written are vital pieces of our shared heritage, offering insights into our past and guiding us toward a thoughtful and informed future.
Launching Gathered Light Gallery is the culmination of these experiences, a platform to showcase and amplify the voices of photographers. Through the gallery, I strive to create a space where art inspires a deeper connection to the natural world, inspiring individuals to become better stewards of the planet. Together, we can honor the past, celebrate the present, and shape a sustainable future for generations to come.
